The Stair Tower is constructed of an 8" reinforced concrete center with 8-12" of stone both on the interior and exterior ... a 28"+ structure providing access to all 3 levels of the home.  The iron handrails and spindles, formed in the design of mountain laurel, were hand forged and crafted by local blacksmith artist Lynda Metcalfe.  The roof support beams of the tower were cut from massive timber beams, reclaimed from a Tobacco Factory in Rockingham, NC, that was over 150 years old when taken down.  Additionally, to the tower's copper roof support system, the entire staircase was constructed from these historic beams (photos)
